It gives me great joy to see the positive changes in the lives of the mums living in the home managed by the Moira Kelly Creating Hope Foundation.
It is my privilege to chair the Foundation, which was launched only 18 months ago. Most people know that Moira Kelly has cared for very ill children for many years now, but not everyone realises that in her new Foundation, Moira also cares for displaced women from around the world. Some came to her from very difficult circumstances and with little hope for a good future for their children themselves. Moira works with them to turn their lives around so they can begin building a healthy family life with real prospects ahead.
There are now more than 20 children and mothers living in the Foundation’s home and it’s wonderful to see what a community they’ve become. The mothers work together and help each other to care for the children, most of whom have high care needs. They take it in turns and share the very many the tasks that need to be done to keep such a big, vibrant and often complex community running smoothly.
In these last 18 months, I’ve watched formerly displaced women transform from feeling hopeless and despairing for their families and themselves to knowing that they now have the tools they need to build a much brighter future.
Moira is building a community in her Foundation and she is nurturing everyone there towards fulfilment and self-sufficiency – and in her own way, she is a mother-figure to them all.
As Mother’s Day draws near, I would like to celebrate mums and mother-figures everywhere for the fantastic job they do, sometimes under very difficult circumstances. You are all very special. Happy Mother’s Day.
